Italy '06
We are young,
wandering the face of the earth,
wondering what our dreams might be worth,
learning that we're only immortal for a limited time...

Ah, Italia... half of my origin. I'm so glad to be able to go after so long. I spent time with family, and walking among ancient things, and in the home of great Mater Ecclesiae.
Below are links to a number of picture sets, that total to around 750 pictures that I took while I was there, finally all catagorized with nifty thumbnails and the like. Yes, I get excited over silly things. No, I won't bore you with details about database queries and the like.
Click below on any of the photosets to be taken to the thumbnails for that set. I apologize for the poor quality of many of the shots (particularly some interesting ones from the Vatican Museum). Alas, I'm not much a photographer, and my little Canon point-and-shoot isn't easy to focus. ANYway, enjoy the photos, if you'd like. If you're bored by this sort of thing, there's no pressure. I swear I won't ever force you to sit down and look at pictures with me for hours on end.

Saint Peter's square and Cathedral Basilica. I went here only a few hours after arriving in Rome, and got in the very long line for a mass celebrated by Pope Bennedict XVI, for which I had VIP seats.

The Vatican Museum. One of the finest, most distinguished museums in the world, of compared to the Luvre. It contains beautiful pieces of antiquity, and gorgeous examples of Baroque art and architecture.

The "Steps of the Saints". These are 28 steps that one traverses on one's knees and following a devotion. They are made from wood and stone from Jerusalem. Some of the pieces of stone are taken from the steps that Christ walked to Calvary.

A beautiful old church and courtyard, complete with stations of the cross. Still populated and run by the Franciscans. The courtyard includes an outdoor modern alter, and stations of the cross.

A beautiful church over 1,000 years old in Matrice. Small, with ancient stonework, this is a popular place for weddings. Notice that the large exterior stones are placed without any sort of mortar.

My cousin Pinnucio's farm-house, left to him by his parents, just outside of Campobasso. He's renovating it, and more importantly, brewing lots of red wine!

The little mountain town that my mother's family all originated from. I wish I could have spent more time here. It certainly had a homey feeling to it.

An ancient city that was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, the same time as Pompei. It was a wealthy city, shown by the mosaics and complex architecture. Though there was wealth in Pompei, it was the norm in Erculano.

The famed ancient city of Pompei. Beautiful 2,400-year-old ruins from an ancient civilization. Two minor problems: I was only able to spend about two hours wandering the streets of Pompei, and my camera batteries ran out about 30 minutes in.

My family. Well, some of them (I wish I thought to get pictures of everybody, but alas.) These are the ones I spent the most time with in Campobasso. Oh, and a REALLY big croissant.
